Characteristics of Critically Ill Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Pneumonia

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia, which first appeared in December 2019 in Wuhan, China's Hubei Province; It is a newly recognized disease that spreads rapidly to especially in other provinces of China and neighboring countries and all over the world. While there have been 79,360 cases worldwide, mostly in China, the number of deaths has reached 2,619 (3.3%), and even death cases have started to seen in our neighbor, Iran. The clinical spectrum of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia can range from a mild infection to critical illness that can result in death.

This article quotes a study published by Yang X et al in the 'Journal of Lancet Respiratory Medicine' on February 21, 2020. In the study, the clinical course and outcomes of critically ill patients with pneumonia associated with acute serious respiratory tract infection caused by coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019, were examined.

The main symptoms of the patients were fever (98%), cough (77%), dyspnea (63.5%), malaise (35%), myalgia (11.5%), runny nose (6%), headache (6%) , vomiting (4%), arthralgia (2%), and chest pain (2%). There was no significant difference between survivors and deceased patients in terms of symptoms.

The authors concluded that critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia have high mortality. Patients were died within 1-2 weeks after being taken to the intensive care unit. The risk of death is high in elderly patients who have chronic diseases and who develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) while in the intensive care unit. According to the authors, the severity of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia can pose a major challenge in hospital intensive care units, especially if insufficient staffing or resources are available.
