Istanbul Medeniyet University February 29 Event: Where Are We in Rare Diseases?
Professor Ilhan Satman MD, president of the TUSEB-Institute of Public Health and Chronic Diseases (TUHKE) participated in the event titled 'February 29: Where Are We in Rare Diseases?' The activity was organized by the Student Club on Rare Diseases Researches at Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine. Professor Satman delivered a speech in the panel ‘Turkey's Future in Rare Diseases’, she presented the perspectives of TUSEB to rare diseases. She continued her talk about the purpose, tasks, and structuring of TUSEB and gave information about the definition and epidemiologic information of rare diseases in Turkey and TUSEB's recently opened calls on rare disease research proposals. Then she announced Turkey’s membership in the Orphanet, the European Rare Diseases and Orphan Medicines Information and Sharing Platform She also touched upon the social and scientific activities carried out in TUSEB on rare diseases so far.
In the last part of her speech, Dr. Satman suggested that courses on rare diseases should be included in the medical curriculum in order to increase the awareness of young researchers in rare disease science and that a subspecialization program should be opened in this field. Professor Satman suggested that medical students follow the TUSEB website. Finally, she emphasized the importance of interest in issues that they can develop themselves, such as opportunities to work with TUSEB and its partners, relations with centers and platforms abroad, and taking part in research projects.
