May 31 World No Tobacco Day

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared May 31 as the "World No Tobacco Day" in 1988 for the first time in order to raise awareness about the harms of tobacco in society. Since this date, the subject is brought to the agenda with various informative and guiding studies and activities at the national and international level on May 31 every year.

In general, tobacco and tobacco products are addictive in individuals who use these products. In addition, cigarette consumption, which is one of the tobacco products, causes significant sequelae and high mortality due to the wide variety of health problems it is associated with. There are 7000 kinds of chemicals in cigarettes, of which more than 250 are harmful and 69 of which are considered carcinogenic.

It is known that tobacco products play an active role in the emergence of many diseases, even in the case of passive smoking as well as active use. At the beginning of these; heart attack, other cardiovascular diseases, various cancers (lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer, throat, mouth, ovarian and breast cancer, etc.), respiratory system diseases, circulatory system diseases, vascular diseases, and hypertension.

With the breath taken during smoking, the smoke goes to the respiratory tract and lungs. For this reason, lung problems are very common among smoking-related health problems. Cigarette smoke has negative effects on the respiratory tract due to its heat, and the various chemicals it contains cause discomfort in the lungs.

Lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, asthma are the most common respiratory system diseases in smokers. These diseases are also the leading causes of death among smokers. Apart from these, other inflammatory diseases of the lungs such as bronchitis and pneumonia are also quite common, since the resistance of the respiratory tract is reduced in smokers.
